What Is The Legal Penalty For Running An Adoption Scam?

by WChan on February 15, 2012

Adoption scams trick couples and individuals seeking children for adoption with false fees and paperwork.  These are not just scams perpetrated by shady foreign cartels.  Individuals here in the United States have been investigated and arrested for running fraudulent adoption services.  These fake services will scam people across several states, so the perpetrators of these adoption scams will face federal prosecution.

Adoption schemes prey on couples that are unaware of the typical adoption process or are willing to resort to less than reputable channels in order to adopt a child from abroad.  This willingness to skip protocol is what is exploited by the scammer.  The internet has helped facilitate these sorts of scams, connecting parents to scammers.

As this is a matter that takes place across states, the FBI will be involved in the investigation and subsequent arrest, if applicable.  In reality, the children to be adopted never materialize and this is only apparent after the couple has been bilked out of hundreds, if not thousands in fees.

Adoption scams are among the worst scams that can be perpetrated and you can expect tough prosecution for adoption fraud allegations.  You will be ordered to pay restitution for any financial benefit gained from the scammed adopting parents.
